iCan House Merges with Goodwill of NW NC

For more than 18 years, iCan House has cultivated a welcoming environment for neurodiverse children, teens, and adults. Founded by Kim Shufran in 2008, iCan House has focused exclusively on helping neurodivergent individuals in Forsyth and surrounding counties build essential life skills and meaningful social connections. Thanks to this targeted approach—and your trust—many of our programs are now running at capacity.

To continue providing the programs and services families rely on, iCan House needs additional resources to grow sustainably.

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina has been a partner and supporter of iCan House for the past 13 years. Goodwill has shared meeting space and additional resources with iCan House through the years. So we are happy to share that iCan House has merged with Goodwill Industries. Goodwill is uniquely positioned to integrate iCan House’s social and emotional clubs and programs within its Mission Advancement services, creating a strong foundation for future growth.

Why merge?

Here are a few reasons why iCan House’s merger with Goodwill will result in increased awareness for the social and emotional clubs and programs:

  • iCan House and Goodwill’s missions are aligned.

  • The two organizations have enjoyed a lengthy partnership.

  • Goodwill can provide additional resources to support the administrative functions of iCan House and its team members.

  • The iCan House model can be replicated in other communities served by Goodwill, in addition to Forsyth County.

Here are some additional details:

What’s staying the same

  • The clubs and small‑group sessions will continue without interruption.

  • The iCan House staff have joined Goodwill and will keep delivering the programs that families know and trust.

  • iCan House programs that have been hosted at Goodwill will continue.

  • Participants will continue building self‑awareness, social skills, and life skills through the same iCan House approach.

What’s different

  • Kim, Melissa, and iCan House staff are now based at Goodwill’s headquarters, 2701 University Parkway, Winston‑Salem, NC.

  • iCan House staff are now Goodwill team members and are compensated by Goodwill.

  • Goodwill will oversee the future growth of iCan House programs to expand capacity to reduce waitlists and meet ongoing community demand.

We are grateful for your support and remain committed to consistent, caring programs for our families. Thank you for being part of the iCan House community as we enter this next chapter, one that preserves the work while opening doors for more individuals to participate.

Testimonials

Victoria

“I was struggling with my daughter, who is immature and needs a little social guidance.  She joined the iClub. After about 4 months in the program, she then from her group to the next level.  She's a work in progress, and I know the staff will work with her and help her mature socially to become a wonderful young woman.”

“Autism is often an invisible condition. Since our nineteen-year-old son has become involved in the iCan House, he has had new opportunities for new directions. Opportunity for inclusion and acceptance by his own circle of friends. Opportunity to learn and practice social skills. He is even learning about dating! He has the opportunity to participate in his own social schedule for get-togethers, dining out, celebrations, and parties...and not as a tag-a-long! The opportunity to learn to be a valuable and functional member of society and of family. iCan House is a vast opportunity for him to become. Our son is no longer invisible. Thank you sincerely for your ongoing support. You do change lives.”

Bobby

“My son was in AB therapy for over two years, mainly for social skills. He hated it (and honestly so did the rest of the family). We spent thousands of dollars monthly on therapy with little to no positive change socially. His teacher recommended iCan House and it has changed his world! He now enjoys coming to his club, and having fun with his new friends. Yes, he now has friends! At iCan House, there is no judgment and no pressure for him to be someone else. He can be authentically himself. And he is learning new skills while having fun!”

Neurodiverse individuals represent over 20% of the adult population.

Neurodiversity includes the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia (math disability), anxiety, dyspraxia, executive functioning, auditory processing, and sensory processing differences.

Neurodivergent individuals are not broken and incomplete. They have a DIFFERENT processing system in their brains.

From the latest CDC report released in March 2025, the prevalence of autism in children 8 years and older is 1 in 31.

Neurodiversity transcends race, gender, orientation, and socioeconomic levels.
